About the Artist
Rebeca de Ojeda - The Work, The Person

Over the last 8 years, Rebeca has focused her art primarily in oil painting. The complex yet expansive nature of the material continues to make it a fascinating medium to explore and develop. Previously, her work came from acrylics, charcoal, graphite, clay, and plaster.

In terms of subject matter, her work depicts a recurring theme: the human, in its physical, psychological, and often esoteric, existence. There is an ongoing curiosity for the discovery of The Other, whether through intensified observation of seemingly minute details, or through the juxtaposition of alternate planes of existence to relate a story or a frame of mind. Some peer into the idea of the construction of Self, some try to explain human relations, some merely explore the nostalgia of memories linked to emotions while others present the body transformed through the viewer's personal associations to the image. The subject is that complex human element, for which we find numerous descriptions and explanations, but which seems never to be fully understood.

This near-obsession with the human idea may stem from a recurring interest in diverse cultures, themes, and activities. Born in Guatemala, raised in Central America, Mexico, and the United States, and now in Paris, Rebeca has had a fair amount of exposure to all kinds of people, cultures and thoughts. Throughout her years of education, her interests outside of art included the sciences (physics was originally her college major), psychology, dance, languages, sociology, and martial arts, to name some. Even within the arts and crafts, we see a wide range of activities, such as culinary arts, product design, and even crocheting. In conjunction to the fine arts, Rebeca has worked as a Graphic/Visual designer for the last 6 years, developing corporate identities, advertising initiatives, and communications, within various corporations both in the private and non-profit sectors. On a more personal level, Rebeca presents herself often as a paradoxical character: she takes things such as her processes and thoughts extremely seriously, while living a joyous, often carefree, existence. One day she could be buried in a James Joyce novel or a guide to spiritual development, and the next day she could be seen dancing amongst a crowd of friends, or seeking new trips and adventures. She is a dynamic character with an ongoing passion for life and people. A request for help from a friend in need is never an imposition. Since early 2006, Rebeca has also been involved with OrphanAid Africa, developing their visual communications as volunteer work.
